Headspace, ECU spotlight mental health

Spreading a positive message to the youth of the South West is the aim of a partnership between Edith Cowan University South West campus student guild and Headspace Bunbury.

This year during Mental Health Week, the two organisations will team up to host the Drug Aware Community Mental Health Day on October 8, to raise awareness of mental health to a younger audience.

To be held at ECU in Bunbury from 10am to 4pm, the day will include various musical performances such as WAM award winning Perth band the Matt Cal Trio, local band Save It For The Weekend, as well as a performance by indigenous dance group Ngalang Wongi and various workshops.

ECU Student Guild student assist officer Sacha King said the region’s Mental Health Committee wanted to do something targeted to a younger audience.

“The university guild and Headspace got together to create a youth-focused event,” she said.

“Our target is people aged 12 to 25, so those who aren’t normally as aware of mental health as the older population.

“We want people to come out and show mental health is OK to talk about.”

The Drug Aware Community Mental Health Day will have guest speaker, Sharon Rose, who will talk about her struggle with mental health and how she dealt with hardship and found healing through dance.

A collaboration CD from Music Feedback, which includes performances from various high-profile Australian artists, including the Matt Cal Trio, singing about mental health, will also be given out and the band will be holding a signing session.
