Coolup crash driver airlifted to Perth

A man has been airlifted to Perth after crashing into a tree near the small town of Coolup, near Mandurah.

The crash happened about 3.30am at the intersection of Coolup Road East and the South Western Highway, about 100km south of Perth.

The man became trapped in his car after it left the road and struck a tree.

Firefighters and volunteer emergency workers freed the driver while St John Ambulance deployed the RAC Rescue helicopter.

The man was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital with serious injuries about 6.30am.

The South Western Highway has been closed in both directions from Coronation Road to Old Bunbury Road.
