Fellow passenger John Smith told the paper the woman was “off her face” and shouting that she wanted cigarettes – and a parachute to escape the aircraft.

“She slapped a young girl and then assaulted the cabin crew with her prosthetic leg,” he said.

“They took it off her, but she started kicking them with her good leg.

“It sounds funny, but it was not a laughing matter at the time. She was totally drunk. It was pretty shocking.”

The woman was then restrained and handcuffed as flight crew diverted to Gatwick Airport to offload her.

As police led her off the aircraft, some passengers sung the lyrics from the Hokey Cokey song – “you put your left leg in, you put your left leg out...”

A Sussex Police spokesman told The Scotsman a 48-year-old Edinburgh resident was arrested at Gatwick Airport on suspicion of using “threatening behaviour”.

“The flight was diverted into Gatwick after it was alleged the woman had been abusive and had thrown a prosthetic leg and food at cabin crew.”

Its not yet known if charges have been laid.
