Guns, drugs near school

Police have seized guns, cash and amphetamines from an alleged drug den operating directly opposite Karrinyup Primary School.

Officers from the organised crime squad's district response team raided the Mitchell Street home early yesterday, allegedly finding a loaded sawn-off rifle next to the bed of one of the sleeping occupants.

A 9mm Glock pistol, 60g of amphetamine, 300 rounds of ammunition and $5650 in cash were also allegedly found in the home.

Det-Sen. Const. Adam Rolfe said it was alarming that young children had to walk past the house every day to get to school.

"It clearly poses a significant risk to that school community that there was a loaded firearm at that address as well as the drugs and drug paraphernalia that were in such close proximity to children," he said.

Police say that as parents were dropping off and collecting their children from the school yesterday, suspected customers of the alleged drug ring turned up at the house to get their daily fix.

"Numerous people did attend at that address while we were searching and they appeared to become very nervous when they realised that detectives were present inside the house," Sen. Const. Rolfe said.

"They were clearly there for untoward purposes."

Police will allege a 31-year-old man and 23-year-old woman had been dealing drugs from the house for some time.

The couple have both been charged with possession of a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply, as well as multiple firearms offences.

Police say none of the weapons was licensed. A paintball gun was also found at the home, along with other property suspected of being stolen.

A third man was taken into custody at the address yesterday and is likely to be charged over a serious domestic assault in Ellenbrook this month.
