Typhoon Rammasun kills 33 in China

The death toll in typhoon Rammasun in China has risen to 33, after the deaths of ten people missing in landslides in the southwestern province of Yunnan were confirmed.

The typhoon lashed southern China last weekend, affecting more than eight million people in the provinces of Hainan, Guangdong, Yunnan and the autonomous Guangxi region, said the official Xinhua agency, quoting the Chinese minister of Civil Affairs.

Since the typhoon hit China, more than 600,000 people have been displaced, of whom 240,000 need urgent help to meet their basic needs.

Economic losses were estimated at around $US4.3 billion ($A4.65 billion), according to official figures released on Monday.

Rammasun, which weakened on Sunday and turned into a tropical storm as it overran the Guangxi region, earlier left 94 dead and six missing in the Philippines.

It also affected northern Vietnam, where at least 16 people died and four were missing due to floods.

China frequently suffers natural disasters during summers due to monsoon rains, particularly in the southern half of the country.
