Horse rescued from Queensland creek

Fire crews in North Bundaberg responded to an unusual call-out overnight, when a five hundred kilogram horse became stuck in a creek.

After almost an hour they managed to free the thoroughbred, with the help of his grateful owners.

Stuck on his side in a cold creek, Chester the horse went for a drink but ended up in it.

The 11-year-old was there for hours and when owners couldn't free him, fire crews and a vet were called in.

Just when they thought he was up, Chester went back down.

They spent almost an hour trying to move him with a winch, a sling and straps.

They helped pull the 500kg thoroughbred away from the water and got ready to roll him and eventually freed him.

There were plenty of pats and praise for their pet. Shivering, he was given a blanket and placed on a drip.

"They go into a state of shock and they develop a bit of cholic,” a veterinarian said.

Chester has been moved to a new paddock where hopefully, the grass is greener.

"We're going to go home and make him some big warm slushy food,” the owner laughed.

"After he gets free from here he'll probably run around in a field and eat grass.”
