Father speaks of horror at watching son gored by bull

The father of a South Australian man injured in Spain’s running of the bulls has told of his horror watching video of his son being gored.

Jason Gilbert is recovering from his injuries in a Pamplona hospital where doctors say he is lucky to be alive.

His father Chris saw the video of the cringe worthy incident on television.

“It singled him out… and basically picked him out of the crowd and had eyes for him,” Chris Gilbert said.

The 600 kilogram bull pinned Jason against a wall as its horns tore flesh from his leg.

The 25-year-old escaped briefly but was gored again, before finally being pulled to safety.

“Any footage of people being mauled or thrown around like that is very distressing, a little more so when it’s your own son,” Mr Gilbert said.

Jason underwent surgery for a torso wound and a gash the length of his thigh. He also has a broken rib and punctured lung.

Almost 50 people were hurt in this year’s bull run, but it is Jason’s dash that has captivated local newspapers.

He hopes to continue his holiday, but may be a little short on funds.

“No insurance covers that sort of event,” Mr Gilbert said.

“He was aware of that and I guess that’s why he was standing of the side.”
