House fire claims life in Nannup

Police and emergency services have joined forces to find the cause of a Nannup house fire that claimed a man’s life on Monday.

The body of a man believed to be in his 60s was found among the ruins of a Gold Gully Road home after the fire was brought under control by firefighters.

Nannup police and firefighters attended the East Nannup address just before 5pm on Monday, believing the occupant to be inside.

After the fire was put out and the resident of the house was unaccounted for, firefighters searched the house and found a man’s body.

Nannup Police officer-in-charge Sgt Duncan Swadkins said he could not release the victim’s name until an identification process had been completed.

“The arson squad were here until early in the morning on Tuesday and the house is no longer a crime scene, ” he said.

“The fire looks non-suspicious at this stage and we’re not yet sure how it started.”

Department of Fire and Emergency Services district officer Danny Mosconi said the department was helping the arson squad in its investigation.

“The house has so much damage, it’s hard to determine where or how it started, ” he said.

The roof, walls and floors collapsed and the single-storey house was completely destroyed.

“Firefighters also had to consider surrounding neighbours and bushland when they contained the fire, ” Sgt Swadkins said.

Sgt Swadkins said neighbours notified authorities about the fire after they saw smoke coming from the house.

Volunteer firefighters returned to the house on Tuesday morning to completely extinguish the fire, as debris was still smoking.

“From here, there will be a coroner’s investigation, ” Sgt Swadkins said.

“Once we’ve identified the victim, we’ll look into his background and provide the coroner with any relevant information.”

Anyone with information about the fire is urged to called Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
