New death probe at Geraldton

Homicide detectives are investigating the second suspected homicide in Geraldton this week after a man in his 40s was found dead outside a unit yesterday.

The death comes after 34-year-old doctor Dinendra Athukorala was found with fatal head injuries in his home on Tuesday, less than 4km from yesterday's scene.

Police said the deaths were not linked.

Emergency services were called to the Seventh Street property in Wonthella about 6.50am yesterday where they found a dead man.

Forensic officers examined several crime scenes including the home, an area surrounding nearby sporting facilities and the carpark at Geraldton Regional Hospital.

Major crime squad detectives were questioning two men.

Dr Athukorala's wife, Chamari Liyanage, who worked with her husband at the local hospital, spent her third day in custody being questioned over his death.

The Mid West medical community yesterday paid tribute to the 34-year-old doctor who had worked at the Geraldton Health Campus for the past year.

The couple, who are understood to be from Sri Lanka, graduated at the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine at the University of Colombo in the mid and late 2000s.
