Community award a great start for Garlett

NAIDOC celebrations started well for City of Rockingham Reconciliation Action Committee chairman Ashley Garlett after he was named NAIDOC Perth Community Person of the Year.

There will be reason to celebrate for Moorditj Koort Health Centre director Ashley Garlett, as the City of Kwinana marks national NAIDOC Week next week.

Mr Garlett, who is also chairman of the City of Rockingham Reconciliation Action Committee, was named Perth Community Person of the Year at an awards ceremony this month.

Mayor Barry Sammels said Mr Garlett has been instrumental in the co-operative management of the City’s Reconciliation Action Plan and was recognised for his efforts last year with the City of Rockingham inspiration leadership award.

Mr Sammels said Mr Garlett was a strong advocate and leader in the Rockingham community and encouraged Year 11 and 12 Aboriginal students to participate in school-based traineeships.

“On behalf of the City of Rockingham, I congratulate Mr Garlett on being named NAIDOC Perth Community Person of the Year,” Mr Sammels said.

The City of Kwinana will mark NAIDOC Week a week earlier than the rest of the country with a series of events at Darius Wells Library and Resource Centre.

A City of Kwinana spokeswoman said community awards, as well as the Albert Windie exhibition, would take place from 10am on Monday.
