Generous act helps parents-to-be

A muted television, six-month-old gossip magazines and a rock-hard chair.

Anyone who has spent a significant amount of time in a hospital waiting room will know these hazards well.

Not everyone will leave with a determination to do something to improve the experience for others.

But, after having a positive experience on the maternity ward at Kalgoorlie Hospital, Shane Glover and Melissa Smith wanted to give something back.

Their largesse came in the form of a brand new lounge suite, which they donated for the hospital to use in its waiting area.

Ms Smith said the donation was driven in large part by Shane's experiences waiting for their child Mackinley to be born.

"I obviously came in here to have my bub in April," she said.

"Seeing the fact there were pretty standard chairs, Shane actually kind of organised it on his own and then came and told me later.

"His theory was there was nowhere comfy or cosy to sit - he's a bit spontaneous like that."

Ms Smith said the young family saw the donation as a way of giving something back to the helpful staff on the ward.

"It was great, I was here for a week and I got to know pretty much all the girls as well over the course of the week," she said.

"I've never really done anything like this before - it's not about getting kudos or anything.

"It was Shane's idea and he thought it would be a nice benefit to the place."
