Harvest festival shows off local produce
More than 7000 people flocked to Rockingham at the weekend for the Autumn Harvest Festival.
Presented by Street Hassel Events, owner Malcolm Barbera said the “massive event” was a “magical day for families”.
“The event successfully showcased local produce to the wider community,” he said.
“Food vendors sold out of food — the feedback was exceptional and we were pleased with the turnout.”
A hit with attendees was the inaugural Gourmet Aussie BBQ Cook-Off, where head chefs from the region’s eateries performed food theatre.
Kent Street Deli co-owner and Rustico Tapas Bar head chef Shannon Whitmore claimed the title with his easy dish of grilled garlic marron, buerre tomato sauce and salad.
Mr Whitmore believed he won because he met the brief to use local produce.
He sourced his marron from Golden Ponds on Mundijong Road and salad from Baldivis.
Mr Whitmore believed the event could only improve.
“There is already talk of joining all of Rockingham’s restaurants together in a long-table dinner at the park,” he said.
“It’s good to have something to attract people to Rockingham, because we do have nice products and great chefs.”
Mr Barbera said initial plans for next year included a summer and winter harvest festival with a photo booth and live art.
