Drugs smuggled into prison

A 40-year-old woman has been convicted of smuggling cannabis into Greenough Regional Prison.

The woman pleaded guilty to supplying a prohibited drug when she appeared in Geraldton Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The court heard she attended the prison for a supervised visit with her de facto partner and slipped him a package containing just over 2 grams of cannabis as they embraced to say goodbye.

The drugs were located inside the prison inmate’s cell during a cell search.

She has been banned from visiting her de facto partner at the prison for the next six months.

The maximum penalty for the offence is $5000, but the woman was fined $500 and ordered to pay costs of $77.

Magistrate Geoff Lawrence said it was a “serious issue this business of people bringing drugs into prisons”.
