NYPD social media campaign backfires

A social media campaign by the New York Police Department has backfired in a monumental way, the NY Daily News reports.

The NYPD asked followers to tweet pictures of positive interactions with officers using the hashtag #myNYPD.

“Do you have a photo w/ a member of the NYPD?” the department asked at 2pm. “Tweet us & tag it #myNYPD. It may be featured on our Facebook.”

Instead, the page was inundated with photos of police brutality from the 2011 Occupy Wall Street movement.

The hashtag immediately began trending and generated over 10,000 responses in just two hours.

Some of the pictures show officers attacking protestors with clubs, while others show heavily armed cops holding them back.

“These are the top pictures when you search the #myNYPD tag,” wrote Twitter user Chelsea D. “You really didn’t think this through did you?”

Other users wrote funny captions for the shocking pictures.

“You might not know this but the NYPD can help you with that kink in your neck,” user Cocky McSwagsalot wrote under a picture of a cop with his knee to the throat of a protester.
