The council will sell off a portion of land to pay for the makeover, likely to cost around $250 million.

Among the council's proposals:

  • Moving existing car parking and storage underground to free up space in the heart of the market.

  • Better facilities for traders, like cool rooms and waste disposal.

  • More retail outlets to attract customers.

  • Improving traffic flow by eliminating the Franklin Street roundabout.

There is another proposal to close the top of Queen Street to traffic to make it safer for pedestrians getting from one side of the market to the other.

The second round of public consultation runs from today until May 16.
