Talk gives tips on buliding resilient kids

In her recent visit to Geraldton, teen specialist and former teacher Claire Eaton shared some handy tips with Nagle Catholic College Year 8 students.

Mrs Eaton, who stands as one of Australia’s positive voices for teenagers, has travelled throughout WA empowering students through her Resilience, Optimism and Confidence (ROC) program, which aims to give children the tools they need to build and keep a healthy mind-set when dealing with issues.

She said she wanted to teach teenagers how to be in control of their lives.

“I want to show teenagers how to be resilient, optimistic and confident in a myriad of life situations; some predictable and some that come from a place we didn’t even know existed, ” she said.

“It’s about helping them deal with boys, girls, parents, teachers and the everyday stresses of school and home-life.

“It’s not assuming the children don’t already have the skills, it’s building on those already established.”

Mrs Eaton said her mission and purpose was to change the negative stigma attached to teenagers.

“I am determined to show teenagers how to be the boss of their own resilience, optimism and confidence in all areas of their lives, ” she said.

“It’s great because the teachers follow through with the program once I have gone by using additional resources.

“The optimal time for kids to learn these skills is between 10 to13 years old, as they move from concrete to analytical learning and also at this time kids are developing their independence.”

Mrs Eaton said she would be returning to teach her programs in Geraldton later in the year.
