Raids bust drug supply links

Three people have been charged with drug offences in connection with drug use by school students in Dunsborough and Abbey.

Dunsborough police have raided properties in Dunsborough and Broadwater in the past week and charged three males – one of them 16 years old – with a string of drug-related offences.

Dunsborough police Sergeant Craig Anderson said officers had been working closely with Cape Naturaliste College, targeting drug use by students in Dunsborough and the Abbey area over recent months.

“This led to drug search warrants being executed on Sunday and Monday this week in Dunsborough and Broadwater, ” Sgt Anderson said.

A 24-year-old male has been charged with possession of a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply after police found 22 bags of cannabis ready for sale at an address in Foxhaven Court in Dunsborough.

A 41-year-old male has been charged with cultivating a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply and possession of a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply after police raided an address in Broadwater.

A 16-year-old male from the same Broadwater address has been charged with the same offences as well as possession of drug paraphernalia after police allegedly found cannabis, a large amount of cash and stolen property at the property.

Cape Naturaliste College principal Mark Gillett said it was “no surprise” issues which affected the wider society found their way into schools from time to time.

“First and foremost, I would ask parents to keep a close eye on their teenagers, ” he said.

“Where drug-taking does occur, it would normally be outside school and therefore a community issue.

“On the very rare occasion that drugs are found at school, we will notify a student’s parents and the police.”

Mr Gillett said the school cooperated fully with police whenever it was asked to and people should not assume it had any greater issues with drugs than other schools.

“In fact police mentioned our school because we are particularly proactive and cooperative, not because we have a significant problem” he said.

“We care about our students and about making sure they stay safe and do the right thing.

“As part of the health curriculum students receive a strong education about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.”
