Broome police crackdown on scooter theft

Broome police revved up their campaign against scooter thefts when they handed out free alarms for the vehicles last week.

Perched under a portable shade structure in the car park of the Boulevard Shopping Centre, officers and Shire of Broome staff handed out and helped fit the devices to appreciative recipients.

Senior Sergeant Brendon Barwick said there were 150 alarms to give away and more than 50 had been fitted just one hour after the campaign began.

"From the turnout today, the community has seen the benefits this has to offer," he said.

"We would hope this will nip the problem of scooter thefts in the bud or help control it at the very least."

Constable Alec Ingram said he hoped the alarms would help push down scooter thefts.

"It's a really good operation that the public have responded to in a positive way," he said.

Scooter owner Daehwun Choi turned up to take advantage of the offer.

"This is a really good thing," he said.

"I think this is very good for me because I have to park my scooter outside at night."
