Ute bursts into flames in Adelaide traffic

An Adelaide motorist has endured a fiery surprise on his morning commute, but still managed to drive the charred vehicle to work.

The man was driving on David Tce at Kilkenny in the western suburbs when another motorist noticed smoke coming from the rear tray of his Ford ute.

The Good Samaritan knocked on the window with the bad news and the driver pulled into a car park where workers from a nearby business helped put out the flames.

“It was smoking heaps out of the back of the tray, the hard top, we lifted that up and then the flames were maybe five or six foot tall and we grabbed fire extinguishers and tired to put them out,” victim Mark told 7News.

He keeps tools for his work in the back of the ute, including butane bottles, two of which exploded in the blaze.

But somehow, once the fire was out, Mark was able to drive his scalded vehicle to work.

“All the damage is in the tray, in the tub, so the tub can be replaced and then we are good to go,” Mark said.

And while many of the tools have been destroyed, Mark knows it could have been worse.

“Thanks to the guys who came across and helped put it out,” he said.

“Ben the guy who stopped me in traffic, thanks very much, he had been following me trying to catch up to tell me for a while, so I appreciate his help.”

It is not known what caused the fire.
