Balloons are a universal sign of happiness and joy and one Kalgoorlie-Boulder group has used them to raise awareness of preventing violence against children.

The Kalgoorlie Aboriginal Family Law Service handed out white balloons in St Barbara's Square last Friday as part the Bravehearts Foundation national campaign.

White Balloon Day, now in its 17th year, is aimed at making Australia the safest place in the world for children to live.

Aboriginal Family Law Service regional co-ordinator Julie Dabb said the day was about getting information out into the community.

"We handed out balloons and gave out information to the community last week to teach about the avenues families can go to for assistance," Ms Dabb said. "The law service was down there giving out information as well as the Department of Child Protection, Bega Health and Best Start.

"We held a free barbecue and did some face painting, mainly it was all engaging with as many people as possible," Ms Dabb said. "In the end we had about 100 people come through and hopefully they came away with a bit more knowledge than before."

The Bravehearts foundation was formed in 1997 and aims to make Australia the safest country for children by 2020.
