Arson squad investigates Bayswater blaze

Police are investigating a suspicious fire which destroyed a Bayswater home early this morning.

Firefighters were called to the Garratt Road address about 2.55am.

When they arrived the found the property engulfed in flames.

It took four fire crews over half an hour to bring the blaze under control.

A police spokesman said arson Squad detectives attended the scene of the fire this morning, and after conducting an examination of the scene they have determined the fire was deliberately lit.

It is believed the vacant house may have been used by squatters in recent times.

The damage bill is estimated at $400,000 and it is understood the home will have to be demolished.

Rewards of up to $50,000 are available for information that leads to the identification and conviction of arsonists.
