Breeders want support for Hendra vaccine

ABC November 3, 2009, 1:42 pm

The Thoroughbred Breeders Association says governments need to help fund vaccines for the Hendra virus.

A Rockhampton vet died from the virus on a property at Cawarral in central Queensland earlier this year.

Scientists are negotiating with commercial partners to produce a treatment from a new serum they have developed.

Bob Frappell from the Thoroughbred Breeders Association of Queensland says the important research must be funded by governments.

"If governments aren't prepared to take a hard decision and microchip horses and then levy them - then I say to the government put up the money anyway," he said.

"They're prepared to put it up for roof insulation or so many other things.

"Put a bit of that [money] towards this and we'll have a prevention to this terrible disease."
