Davide Santon's fiancee fuming at Newcastle United

In some transfer windows it would barely have made a splash - but on a quiet transfer deadine day, at the end of perhaps the quietest transfer window in a good five years, the news that Davide Santon was being sent out on loan to Inter Milan was quite a big story on Monday morning.

But while it was an interesting bit of news for fans, it was far more than that for two people in particular: first, the 24-year-old star himself; and second, his Newcastle born-and-bred fiancee Chloe Sanderson.

In scenes that make you wish ITV would re-make classic TV drama show 'Footballers' Wives' for the social media generation, Sanderson told the world exactly what lay behind her other half's departure from the Magpies:

Santon's girlfriend was not very happy with Newcastle United.

Further Tweets revealed more: "This is not just a loan, it’s a loan with obligation to buy... Newcastle as good as told him if he stayed he didn’t have a place in the team.

"They tried to deny it this morning, to keep it on the down low... so other teams wouldn’t put in an offer for JUST a loan, because Davide would have preferred that. To stay in the premier league, but Newcastle would have lost the guaranteed buy and money."

Eagle-eyed readers will notice that we've embedded these Tweets via a screenshot from the peerless Eurobot tive transfer deadline day ticker, rather than Twitter directly.

That's because barely more than half an hour after they were shared with the world, Chloe decided to take them down - with the Newcastle Chronicle reporting that the club have strenuously denied the claims.

No doubt the great and good at St James' Park were straight on the phone to Santon as soon as her words went viral - and there probably followed a stern ticking off about biting hands that feed, and warnings about what happens when he comes back to the club in the summer (though if the 'obligation to buy' bit is true, that wouldn't have been an issue).

Plenty of her other Tweets remain undeleted, but unfortunately they say less about football transfers and more about exotic Mediterranean holidays and getting engaged and stuff like that:

We think it's a shame if she was told to take the tweets down. Loyalty is all too rare a quality these days, and all Chloe is doing was sticking up for her fella (mixed, no doubt, with clear frustration at the thought that she'll have to up sticks and move to Italy).

The worst bit is that Santon's sentiments - even if expressed second hand - reflect well on him and his desire to prove himself on Tyneside; they reflect badly only on Newcastle's club ownership.

Santon's official confirmation that he was heading back to Inter came via his Facebook page, incidentally:

"Life is strange... I never expected to return," he wrote.

"Thanks Newcastle and thanks to all the fans for these 3 and a half years together... we've spent many good times.... This city and this team will always remain in my heart.

"I start a new adventure.... I'm happy to return to Inter... There I started my career and there I lived so many important moments.... I will give my best to repay the faith."
