German World Cup star insures body parts for $4.3m
Germany’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has taken the precautionary measure of insuring his hands for €3 million ($4.3m).
The Bayern Munich stopper is regarded as one of, if not the best goalkeeper in world football and, at the relatively young age of 28, has a number of honours to his name.
Germany’s No. 1 helped his club to an incredible league and cup double last season, a Champions League title the year before and then went on to lift the World Cup in Brazil just a few short months ago.
Having been named Germany’s footballer of the year in 2014 and earning the World Cup Golden Glove – which is given to the tournament’s best goalkeeper – Neuer has taken it upon himself to insure his safe pair of hands for a whopping $4.3 million, according to the General Association of German Insurers.
The policy protects Neuer, and his club Bayern, should the goalkeeper suffer a career-ending injury to his hands.
"A dislocated finger is for him, however nothing more than a piece of cake," says the Insurance Association.
Neuer is not the first sports star to have one or more of his limbs insured, however, with David ‘Golden Balls’ Beckham insuring his…err…legs, of course!
The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and LA Galaxy midfielder had his pins insured for $62m, whilst football’s vainest star Cristiano Ronaldo has his legs covered for an incredible $90m per leg.
Those two policies, however, pale into complete and utter insignificance compared to Lionel Messi’s insurance policy for his legs. According to reports in Spain, the four-time FIFA World Player of the Year pays an astounding $540,000-$720,000 per year to have his legs insured for $789m.
