Gai Waterhouse retires Queen Elizabeth II-owned horse

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will has said goodbye to her horse Carlton House, who was retired from racing this morning.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse confirmed the immediate retirement this morning, saying Carlton House will stand the coming spring breeding season at Darley Stud in the Hunter Valley.

Carlton House's best finishes included running third in the 2011 English Derby and second to Australia's So You Think in the 2012 Prince of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Following the Prince of Wales Stakes, the Queen sent the horse to Waterhouse to take over.

Carlton House enjoyed Group 1 placings in the Ranvet Sakes - second behind Silent Achiever - and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes - where he ran third to It’s A Dundeel - but did not win in Australia.
