Lance Franklin apologises for Sydney car smash

Lance Franklin has apologised after he was issued with a negligent driving ticket for his role a car accident in Sydney's eastern suburbs on Wednesday night.

And in further bad news for the Sydney Swans star, Jeep Australia says the accident could cost Franklin's girlfriend Jesinta Campbell her ambassador contract with the company.

Franklin was interviewed by police after he lost control of his vehicle and slammed into four parked cars just after 7pm.

The ticket carries a $405 fine and three demerit points.

Speaking before training on Thursday morning, Franklin confirmed no one was injured in the accident.

"I'm truly am sorry for the inconvenience I have caused to the other people's cars and I'm deeply sorry for that," he said.

"I didn't see the car on the left hand side of the road. It was just an accident and accidents do happen.

"I'm so glad that no one was hurt in this case and for the people's cars that were hit, we can get them fixed up as soon as possible and move on

"I don’t think they were there at the time so I didn't get a chance to speak to them.

"In the next couple of days there’s no doubt I will be in contact with them and my insurance people and work out what we’re going to do."

A police spokesperson said alcohol was not a factor in the accident, while Franklin confirmed he was not speeding or texting.

Franklin was driving a Jeep belonging to Campbell and the incident has put the model's deal with the car maker in jeopardy.

"Pending the outcome of the police investigation and discussions with Jesinta and her management, we will then decide our relationship moving forward," a Fiat Chrysler Group Australia spokeswoman told Fairfax.

"It's probably a bit early to tell whether the incident will affect Jesinta's contract. We’re still waiting for the police to finalise their investigation."

Under Campbell's brand ambassador deal, she is provided with a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, valued at $77,000.

Franklin said Campbell's car was "the last thing on her mind at the moment".

"It was more about me and how I felt from the accident. Obviously no one wants to be in an accident and be injured. Let alone me, but someone else be injured. Fortunately enough I wasn't injured and nobody else was."

Earlier this year, Campbell spoke glowingly of the vehicle's power.

"I get to drive the latest and the greatest Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's a beast - a long way from the Yaris (her first car)," she told Fairfax.

"If you put your foot to the pedal, she can really roar. I love it. It's got all the parking sensors and the rear camera so it basically parks itself."

Franklin said he was frustrated that he had put himself and the Swans back in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

"Obviously there's frustration, more for myself than anyone," he said.

"This isn't something that anyone wants to go through. An accident is an accident, but I don't want to see myself in the spotlight again and obviously I've found myself in it again.

"But I just want to move forward as quickly as possible and get on to this week’s game (against Melbourne)."

Swans coach John Longmire said the club would take no further action and expressed their desire to move on.

"We can't do much about what happened last night," Longmire said.

"That was an accident so it's something that's a bit hard to control. It was an accident that happens to a lot of people and unfortunately it happened to Lance last night."

Photos of Wednesday night's accident quickly spread on social media, with witnesses saying Franklin was picked up by a friend after dealing with police.

"I looked out the window and it looked like four cars in the collision," local resident Craig McDonald told Fairfax.

"He was just hanging around.

"He got recognised and he was trying to stay out of the light of the cameras."

Another witness said Franklin looked shocked as he spoke to police after the incident.

"He was facing oncoming traffic and he looked like he was in shock, but accommodating as he was taking police questions," the woman told News Ltd.

It is the second time this year that Franklin has had some car trouble. In March, the Swans confirmed he had lent his Mercedes to teammate Dan Hannebery, who was involved in a minor accident.

Franklin also lost his licence for six months in 2012 after he was caught speeding 40km/h over the limit in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton East.
