Whale voyage kayakers welcomed in Sydney

ABC November 5, 2009, 4:00 pm

Five environmental activists who have spent the last 36 days kayaking from Byron Bay to Bondi Beach have been welcomed by about 30 surfers.

The kayakers were following part of the southern migration route of the hump back whale to raise awareness about the animals.

One of the group, professional surfer Dave Rastovich, says he wants to see action from federal environment minister Peter Garrett.

"You said you would defend these animals and take a ship to Antarctica to enforce those sanctuary laws," he said.

"You said you would take Japan to the international courts and none of that has happened.

"Get down there and do the job that we want you to do, the Australian people want you to be there."
