New home for Rocky chimps

Maria Hatzakis, ABC November 3, 2009, 12:02 pm

The Rockhampton Zoo's chimpanzees are due to move into a new home today after spending about 20 years living in their current enclosure.

Zoo keeper Graeme Strachan says Cassie and Ockie will move into the new enclosure's sleeping area before construction of the public viewing area is finalised next week.

He says the $1.2 million project will provide the chimps with a more natural living space.

"The whole environment is so much more complex and so much more natural than what they've been used," he said.

"It's much more spacious, much more height to it so there should be a lot more for them to think about and do.

Mr Strachan says he hopes that visitors enjoy seeing the chimps in the new environment.
