NZ athletes horrified by Christchurch quake

New Zealand cricketers, in India for the World Cup, have reacted in horror to the shocking scenes that unfolded in Christchurch after the horrific earthquake hit the city on Tuesday.

"Thoughts go out to the people of Chch today. Terrible thing to have happened again," Black Caps opener Martin Guptill tweeted.

At least 30 people are feared dead in the 6.5 magnitude quake that hit New Zealand's second largest city and the death toll is likely to rise in a region still trying to recover from a 7.0 quake that shook the region last September.

"The team woken early in India to news of another Christchurch earthquake. Thoughts are with everyone and hoping all are OK," the NZC said on its Twitter account.

Veteran player Scott Styris was concerned for the members of his squad who have families in Christchurch.

"Watching CNN. Amazing scenes. Some worried boys here in India. Be safe," he said.

England off-spinner Graeme Swann shared the concern of his rivals.

"Shocking news for Christchurch. Fingers crossed for everyone's safety."

Amongst the New Zealand World Cup squad, fast bowler Hamish Bennett plys his trade for the Canterbury team in the devastated area, while Netherlands captain Peter Borren was born in Christchurch.

Other New Zealand athletes affected by the devastation are Super Rugby side the Canterbury Crusaders.

It is thought the side will still travel to Wellington for Saturday’s S15 clash against the Hurricanes, but players will be given the option to opt out.

Half of the squad were still at their Christchurch training base when the quake struck, with All Black Richie McCaw, who is recovering from surgery on a fractured foot, was said to have been thrown from his chair with in impact.

Wellington Phoenix defender Ben Sigmund, who was last night named Wellington Phoenix’ player of the year was also affected.

After the quake struck Sigmund frantically tried to contact his parents and sister who live in the region. Luckily for Sigmund his family were one of the lucky ones.
