The majority of Australians want to see Prince William succeed Queen Elizabeth to become the next king, according to an exclusive poll on Seven News.

Only 30 per cent of those surveyed said they wanted Prince Charles to be the next king, while 58 per cent of people interviewed said they favoured Prince William to take the crown.

In the same poll, 56 per cent said they didn't want the Queen to stand down to make way for either Prince Charles or Prince William.

The Newspoll, commissioned by the Seven Network and British Broadcaster ITN, was conducted over the weekend and surveyed 1200 people throughout Australia.

The poll results give an indication of Prince William's popularity in Australia and comes ahead of his arrival in Sydney.

The second-in-line to the throne arrives Tuesday - it will be his first official visit since he toured with his late mother Princess Diana as a toddler.

He arrived in Auckland Sunday for the start of a five day visit to New Zealand and Australia.

On arrival in Australia, the prince will head straight to Admiralty House in Sydney to meet Governor-General Quentin Bryce.

He'll also be given a traditional Aboriginal welcome at an inner-Sydney community centre.

The Prince yesterday visited Eden Park stadium in New Zealand where he met All Blacks players and heard about plans for next year's rugby world cup.
