American playboy fined over Aussie jaunt

A former boyfriend of British royal Princess Beatrice is returning to the United States after copping a $5,000 fine for wreaking havoc on the Gold Coast.

Paolo Liuzzo, 27, was arrested on the Gold Coast on September 27 after crashing an $80,000 black Audi hire car into traffic lights, and failing to pay for accommodation and restaurant bills at Conrad Jupiters casino.

Police charged him with fraud, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possessing 2g of cocaine and driving without due care and attention.

He pleaded guilty and was fined $5,000 in the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday, with no conviction recorded, and was given a lambasting by Magistrate Brian Kilmartin for his "cavalier" attitude towards the court.

The case was adjourned last week when Liuzzo failed to appear in court, with his lawyer explaining that he was asleep, having been up most of the night fearing he would miss his flight from Sydney.

Liuzzo was reportedly Princess Beatrice's first love when she was 17. They started dating in July 2005 and split in May 2006.

His lawyer Bill Potts told AAP on Wednesday his client - who he described as "challenging" - now planned to return to New York.

"It was unusual for me to take a case like that, but I did it," Mr Potts told AAP.

"He was somewhat challenging.

"He gave me a big hug as he left and said 'I'm going to tell the English press that you are a genius, a saint and the best lawyer in the world'.

"He says he's about to go back to New York."

Liuzzo, who has been living in Sydney during a year-long Australian holiday, rejected the option of doing community service.
