Another Red Wednesday unlikely: BoM

More dust storms have been reported in western NSW but a repeat of the dramatic weather that blanketed Sydney in red on Wednesday is unlikely over the weekend, the weather bureau says.

Blue skies, but Sydney still dust-laden

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued a severe weather warning with damaging winds in the ACT and southern and central NSW.

The BoM website says a cold front is expected to move across western NSW on Friday afternoon and overnight and to reach the state's east by Saturday morning.

Dust has been reported over far western NSW, including Broken Hill, and is predicted to move east to Hay and Griffith during the day.

There could be some dust in the air in Sydney on Saturday but BoM duty forecaster Stephen Stefanac says winds are not as strong as they were on Wednesday, when dust covered most of the state.

"At this stage, we're not expecting a severe dust storm like we had the other day," Mr Stefanac told AAP.

Big dust storms were difficult to predict because they were rare, he said.

"Given that was a one-off event the other day, this is a really tricky one to get a handle on, we've just got to try and monitor it."
