An Australian businessman living in the Philippines has been murdered during a home invasion.

Werner Holz, a 70-year-old man originally from Melbourne, was stabbed at least 20 times and robbed of $42,000 in cash and jewellery.

His wife was left tied up in the couple's bedroom but escaped unharmed.

Mr Holz had been living in the Philippines for the past 12 years.
