New guidelines for making heritage homes energy-efficient

ABC November 8, 2009, 10:48 am

Tasmania's Heritage Council has released new guidelines for homeowners wanting to install alternative energy products.

The brochure, called Modern Services on Heritage Buildings, gives advice to people who want solar panels, wind turbines, water tanks and heat pumps.

The Chairman of the Heritage Council, Michael Lynch, says the organisation wants to work with homeowners to achieve the best outcome for everyone.

"We simply can't afford to say to owners of heritage-listed places, 'don't touch it' - it's just not going to work," he said.

"We might have to give a bit and they might have to give a bit, but at the end of the day you retain those really important heritage places and the people that live in them can live in them in a manner which they are entitled to do."
