The Country Fire Service (CFS) says its communications systems are effective and any troubles are due to infrequent human error.

Some members of the CFS say fire crews are often unaware of potentially-dangerous road accidents sometimes for more than an hour.

The CFS members say lives are being put at risk because of flaws in the emergency services communication system.

But CFS manager of operations planning, Malim Watts, says changes made last year to the way messages were passed on to the CFS fixed the problem.

Mr Watts says reviews are done after any long delays in notifying fire crews about accidents.

"More often than not the results of our investigations into these matters are they're human caused, they're not necessarily systemic failure," he said.

"Someone's made a mistake somewhere and there's no much more we can do."

Under a memorandum of understanding, all emergency agencies have agreed to share information about vehicle accidents as soon as possible.
