Dialysis inaction threatening lives: Greens

Eric Tlozek, ABC November 5, 2009, 4:06 pm

Inaction by State and Territory Governments is threatening the lives of remote community dialysis patients, the Australian Greens say.

The Alice Springs Hospital can no longer accept interstate dialysis patients because its facilities are at capacity.

Several dialysis patients from remote communities are refusing to go to Adelaide or Perth for treatment because of the distance from their families.

Senator Rachel Siewert says the states and the Northern Territory should agree to fund nocturnal dialysis places in Alice Springs.

"It's not as if they haven't had the statistics," she said.

"It's not as if governments haven't seen this problem looming.

"And yet it seems to be now that they're throwing up their hands and putting in place a ban that actually has a real impact on people's lives.

"We need to get over that and they need to get beyond the rhetoric and make it work."
