A 30-year-old man has been stabbed to death in the NSW Hunter Valley.

Police and paramedics were called to a home on Cumberland Street in Cessnock at 11.45pm (AEDT) on Wednesday and found the man suffering from a stab wound.

He was rushed to Cessnock Hospital but later died, police said.

Police have set up Strike Force Stitz, comprising local and Homicide Squad detectives, to investigate the killing and establish a crime scene at the home.

A 28-year-old woman is helping police with their inquiries.
