Two men have been sentenced for the murder of a known drug dealer in Broken Hill in far west New South Wales last year.

Aaron John Willetts, 37, has been jailed for 25 years and Ryan Gurney, 29, for 24 years.

The Supreme Court heard the men went to 61-year-old Fredrick Doldissen's house on Good Friday last year to get a refund or replacement for drugs they had bought from him.

The court heard they began assaulting him with an axe handle and a sword when he refused.

Justice Megan Latham said the men did not decide to murder Mr Doldissen until after the assault started.

The court was also told Gurney mutilated the victim because he had allegedly been sexually abused by him when he was a child.

Willetts will serve a non-parole period of 19 years and Gurney 18 years.

Willetts will serve a simultaneous jail term of two years for setting fire to Mr Doldissen's property after the murder.
