An Asian tourist has drowned in the surf near a notoriously dangerous river mouth north of Coffs Harbour, on the mid-north coast of New South Wales.

At around 5pm yesterday a 27-year-old Korean national was swimming with three friends in the Red Rock River near the local caravan park.

He got caught in a rip caused by the outgoing tide and was washed into the surf.

An off duty lifeguard dragged the unconscious man onto his board and paddled to rock where he commenced CPR but the man could not be revived.

A report is being prepared for the State Coroner.
