Tasmania's Parliament has voted down a bill giving terminally ill people the right to end their lives.

The Greens leader, Nick McKim, brought forward his Dying with Dignity private members bill for debate more than four hours ago.

Despite MPs being allowed a conscience vote, they voted largely along party lines.

All Tasmanian Greens members supported the motion, while all Liberal members opposed it.

The bill was defeated 16 votes to seven.
