Two people are being questioned over an attempt to blow up an ATM at Penguin in north-west Tasmania.

Police say someone tried to blow up the cash machine on the town's main road just before 4:00am.

The ATM was burnt but police say no money was stolen.

Two people seen leaving the area were picked up a short time after.
