Police are investigating ACT Chief Magistrate Ron Cahill for allegedly giving documents to a colleague that could affect the administration of justice.
ACT Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Jon White called in police last week over material provided to Victorian Magistrate Peter Lauritsen.
ACT Attorney-General Simon Corbell confirmed on Tuesday that Mr Cahill and his office were being investigated as the alleged source of the documents.Mr Corbell said he had spoken to Mr Cahill about the matter but would not say if the chief magistrate had been asked to step down from the bench during the investigation.
"This is obviously a very serious matter ... involving potentially an issue around the administration of justice," Mr Corbell told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday."It goes to the heart of the roles and responsibilities of judicial officers."
Mr Corbell said he was taking advice from a government solicitor and the Department of Justice and Community Safety, adding that he expected some of the matters to be resolved by the end of the week.
