Regatta organisers blown away with success

ABC November 2, 2009, 10:12 am

Organisers of Tasmania's newest sailing regatta aim to make it the biggest and best regatta in the state.

The inaugural Showdown Regatta was held on Hobart's River Derwent during the weekend and has been declared a success.

Media officer Peter Campbell says the event has great potential.

"Particularly at this time of the year because it does enable the, a lot of the sailors to prepare for the big racing, the national championships and the offshore racing at Christmas, New Year," he said.

Mr Campbell says while keelboat entry numbers were a little disappointing, other classes were strong.

"In terms of the dinghy classes, the off the beach classes, it's been an outstanding success, really outstanding.

"Almost 150 entries from around the state, in something like a dozen or more different classes and some of the best young sailors in Tasmania competing.

"We also had a very good entrant from Victoria."
