The ACT Greens want Bunda Street in Canberra's city centre to be turned into a pedestrian precinct.
The Government is spending $4 million to improve pedestrian facilities in the Civic area but the Greens says that will not solve safety issues.
The Greens have put forward a list of ideas including restricting traffic access on Bunda Street between 7:00am and 7:00pm.MLA Caroline Le Couteur says the area is poorly designed and desperately needs changes.
"The Government has got money to spend on Bunda Street, let's think about it and not just replicate the problems that we've got," she aid."Let's do it properly and let's make it something that works for pedestrians, works for all the people sitting here having their coffees.
"Make it really nice environment, not an environment that hasn't got enough space for the cars and the people."Acting Municipal Services Minister Simon Corbell says the Government wants to consult with businesses and the community before making big changes.
"We want to go out and talk more with retailers and property owners about it because we know that restricting the traffic flow to one way will have implications," he said."Equally we'll need to work out the parking arrangements and all of those sorts of things.
"We want to go and do that work."
