The New South Wales Opposition has referred the Minister for Transport David Campbell to the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, claiming his policies are endangering the elderly and disabled.
The Roads and Traffic Authority has ordered the closure of all lifts on pedestrian overpasses between 6:00pm and 6:00am.
The Government says it is because of ongoing vandalism. The Opposition spokesman on disability services, Andrew Constance, says the move forces the elderly and disabled to cross busy roads rather than use pedestrian overpasses.
He says the Government is putting lives at risk by forcing the vulnerable to cross busy roadways."To deny access to footbridges as a result of turning of lifts, I think is discriminatory and it is certainly putting people's lives at risk," he said.
"If it's a case of extending the hours [of staff], or a case of putting in cameras to stop the vandalism on those lifts, for goodness sake, don't put the lives of people with disabilities and senior citizens at risk by denying them access to bridges across some of Sydney's busiest roads."
