Queensland killer could be charged with new murders, reports say
A Queensland detective says a suspected serial killer is set to be charged with murdering two missing women.
Derek Sam is suspected of killing British backpacker Celena Bridge and teacher’s aide Sabrina Glassop, who disappeared on an outback road in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast nearly 20 years ago, but has denied any involvement in the two cases, News Corp has reported.
Sam is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of schoolgirl Jessica Gaudie, whose body has never been found.
After a renewed investigation, police are expected to finalise a brief of evidence against Sam, Detective Senior Sergeant Daren Edwards told News Corp.
“There remains an opportunity for Derek to help himself. All police are trying to get is an outcome for those families,” Detective Senior Sergeant Edwards said.
Bridge, 28, disappeared in July 1988 after she was seen at Booloumba Creek Road in Kenilworth.
Kenilworth teacher's aide Glassop disappeared on the exact same road a year later.
According to News Corp, police are considering a plea deal should Sam lead them to the duo’s bodies.
But after being taken to the Maroochydore police station and then the notorious stretch of road in 2016, Sam did not assist police.
Gaudie had been babysitting Sam’s children in August 1999 when she went missing in Nambour, in south-east Queensland.
Sam was later convicted of her murder in 2001.
Police are putting together a case against Sam using witness statements and expect to go to prosecutors by the middle of the year, according to Detective Senior Sergeant Edwards.
