Hird welcomed home after rehab stint

Former Essendon coach James Hird has returned to his Melbourne home after a stint in rehab following a suspected drug overdose last month.

News Corp reports 44-year-old Hird looked rejuvenated as he left his home in the affluent suburbs of Toorak yesterday.

The former Bombers coach resigned in 2015 following the supplements scandal that engulfed the club.

His release from rehab comes as the AFL confirmed it would welcome Hird back to the sport.

At the time of the initial incident Hird's family released a statement acknowledging the public support towards the former Essendon coach.

"We wish to express our appreciation for the public support that has been given to James and our family since news of his hospitalisation became known," Tania Hird said in a statement.

The AFL said it had been in touch with Hird family through an intermediary.

"We have reached out to the people we think and hope are having a dialogue with the family to make it clear our concern, and to offer to do anything we can," AFL chief Gillon McLachlan said yesterday.
