Rampage driver's girlfriend speaks as death toll rises

The death toll from the car attack on pedestrians in Melbourne's CBD has risen to five, with a three-month-old baby dying in hospital.

Police confirmed the boy's death late on Saturday night and said four people remained in a critical condition in hospital after the incident on Friday afternoon.

A 10-year-old girl, 25-year-old man and a woman, 32, died at the scene after the car driver sped along Bourke Street Mall and a 33-year-old man died in hospital on Friday night.

Victoria Police are still waiting for the go-ahead to interview Dimitrious "Jimmy" Gargasoulas over Friday's rampage.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said Gargasoulas had surgery on Saturday afternoon after he was shot in the arm on Friday during the incident.

He told the media on Sunday police wanted to interview him as soon as possible, but were waiting for doctors to allow Gargasoulas to be interviewed, and have been told it might not be on Sunday afternoon.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull also addressed the media, saying: "The offender will be charged with murder and will be dealt with the full severity of the law".

"We have the best police and security services in the world... Our police officers are working day and night to keep the people safe. They deserve our support," the Prime Minister said.

Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten added there could be no satisfactory explanation for the "evil" attack that killed five people.

He joined Turnbull in laying flowers outside the GPO building in the mall on Sunday, and said Bourke Street was a special place to so many Victorians.

"There can be no satisfactory explanation for this act of evil," Mr Shorten told reporters.

He said an "evil, murderous hoon" had killed people in an iconic street he had been visiting his entire life.

The fifth death comes as the girlfriend of the man said to be behind the wheel has spoken about being taken hostage and driven around Melbourne while stowed in the car's boot.

Akiir Muo, 25, told the Daily Mail she witnessed her boyfriend, Dimitrious "Jimmy" Gargasoulas allegedly attack his brother in a bloody stabbing frenzy.

"I tried to pull Jimmy away from Angelo but his face was covered in blood, I couldn't see his face," she said.

"It was the scariest thing I've ever seen."

She said she begged her boyfriend to stop and slow down as he drove around the city before being dropped off at the Bolte Bridge prior to the horrific incident in the city centre.

"It was scary... I was just thinking my life is going to end... I'm gonna die."

Hospitals have treated 37 other people injured in Friday's carnage.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said on Sunday at least 12 remained in hospital and there were grave concerns for several of them.

Among those reported to be in hospital are the mother and sister of the 10-year-old girl, who died.

Community members have banded together to donate funds to the girl's family.

The driver has been identified as James Gargasoulas.

"This is a family like any of ours," Avi Yemini wrote on a crowdfunding page.

"The public space where they were so terrorised, is a space which belongs to every single one of us."

As the shock of the tragedy set in, hundreds visited Bourke Street Mall to pay their respects

Floral tributes were building on the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth streets, many leaving notes along with bouquets.

First responder Sharon Carpenter made the effort to come on Saturday a day after she rushed to help those injured outside her workplace.

"I didn't want to sit around the house," she said.

"I wanted to come today and put some flowers down."

The driver was seen yelling and calling people on Melbourne's street "sheep".

Gargasoulas was arrested after police shot him in the arm and blocked his way.

Gargasoulas's mother, Emily Gargasoulas, told reporters she was ashamed to be his mum.

'I couldn't believe it... it make me feel sick," she said.

She also apologised, saying she was "so so sorry, had strong words for her son who she told to "die in hell".

Donations for the families of the victims can be made at any Westpac Bank branch, or via the Bourke Street Fund website.

The Victorian Government promised to make an initial donation of $100,000 to the fund.

A vigil is also being planned for at Federation Square, at 5.30pm Monday.
