WATCH: Man's stroll with axe minutes before tourist found stabbed

Chilling footage has captured a man casually strolling through a Sydney car park armed with an axe, moments before a French tourist was allegedly attacked in a suspected robbery-gone-wrong.

Witnesses claimed the 32-year-old victim, known as ‘Frenchy’, came running to a nearby Artarmon business about 10am Tuesday, suffering stab wounds.

“I saw a guy running up the Pacific Highway holding his chest screaming ‘I’ve been stabbed, I’ve been stabbed’,” witness Ian Jobsz said.

The victim managed to cross the busy Pacific Highway and get into a car dealership where workers did what they could to stop the bleeding before paramedics arrived.

“He said ‘I’ve been stabbed, he smashed my car with a tomahawk or an axe and he stabbed me’" Mr Jobsz said.

“He was just yelling out all sorts of things, he was quite erratic,” witness Ian Wood said.

The French tourist was taken to Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital where he remained in a serious but stable condition, suffering stab wounds to the chest.

He is expected to remain in hospital for at least a few days while he recovers.

“It didn’t look lethal but obviously had a lot of blood,” witness Jacqueline Qualtrough-Turner told 7 News.

Police later arrested New Zealand man, Irving Stevens, a short distance away in relation to the alleged attack.

Stevens was taken to the Chatswood Police Station and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage.

It’s alleged the 34-year-old accused had also used an axe to damage windows at a Pacific Highway business before the alleged stabbing.

Stevens was refused bail and is set to appear in the Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday.
