Darwin homes shaken by earthquake off Indonesian coast

Darwin homes shook and doors were rattled on Wednesday morning after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck near the Banda Sea off the coast of Indonesia.

Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to Australia after the quake struck at 9.17am Indonesian local time.

Tremors were felt in parts of the Northern Territory.

"Rattling doors at Larrakeyah!" Floyd Greenhouse wrote on Facebook.

The quake's epicentre was 184 kilometres north east of Maluku Barat Daya on the Molucca islands, the Indonesian geophysics agency says.

It had a depth of 173 kilometres and there were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake struck in the part of the Banda Sea which lies on the "Ring of Fire", which is believed to be where about 90 per cent of the world's earthquakes take place.
